Society for Terrorism Research, C-REX, University of Oslo, and the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) are pleased to announce the call for papers for the 13th annual International conference June 20-21, 2019: The data revolution in terrorism research: implications for theory and practice

Proposals for presentations, symposia, posters and other formal sessions will be considered for inclusion in the program if they are received by January 30, 2019. Conference attendees are not required to present.

About this year’s conference
The purpose of the conference is to bring together academics from around the world to present and discuss cutting-edge research on terrorism. We welcome contributions on all terrorism-related topics from both academics, PhD students, and specialists outside the academy.

The theme for this year’s conference (June 20-21, 2019) – “The Data Revolution in Terrorism Research: Implications for Theory and Practice“ – is intended to inspire a discussion of how the terrorism studies field can and should make use of the increased availability of empirical data. The past two decades have seen a steady growth in terrorism-relevant data of all kinds, from rare historical documents via detailed biographical information to big data from social media platforms.

As the terrorism research field transitions from a state of data scarcity to one of sufficiency and perhaps even excess, a range of questions arise. How do we best harness the new resources? Which old questions can we now better address, what new issues emerge, and which new methods become salient? How do we handle the associated ethical issues and privacy regulations?

The conference theme is to be interpreted very broadly, and we will consider papers on all terrorism-related topics. In the selection of roundtables and symposia, on the other hand, priority will be given to panels addressing the conference theme.

Biographical information and the abstract provided will be published in the conference program unless requested otherwise.

Special symposia instructions:
Submit symposium abstract identifying the moderator, with the name of each presenter, and topic of each presentation.

Each symposium participant will email their contribution’s abstract, identifying in which symposium they will present.

Roundtable discussions:
The organizing committee plans to facilitate smaller round-table discussions during the conference. Please send your suggestions for these discussions to the organizing committee at STR2019-Oslo@c-rex.uio.no

Student paper competition:
The organizing committee wishes to promote the work of graduate students (MA/PhD) in the field of terrorism research. All paper presentations submitted by graduate students will therefore be eligible for the honour of Best Student Paper. The winner will have the written paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Behavioral Sciences of Terrorism and Political Aggression. The award decision will be made by a committee comprising STR Governing Board members, editors of the journal, and selected specialists.

The author(s) must initially submit an abstract on the general submission date of 30 January 2019. At the time of abstract submission they must indicate that they wish for their paper to be considered for the Student Paper Contest. It is only after their abstract is accepted that competition entrants should send a full paper to the conference organisers. All those papers eligible for consideration must be submitted by 30 April 2019. This paper must comply with the author guidelines for the journal.

Eligibility
The primary author’s presentation of the paper at the Conference in Oslo 20-21 June 2019 is required. The primary author should be a current graduate student studying through a university or successfully completed her/his graduate studies since 1 January 2019. This competition is not open to current undergraduate students.

Excursion to Utøya
The day after the main conference, on June 22, the organization committee offers an optional excursion to Utøya, the main site of the terrorist attacks in Oslo on 22 July, 2011. Sixty-eight (mostly) youths were killed and many more wounded by a lone right-wing terrorist.

The excursion to Utøya will include presentations from survivors, police officers, and researchers on the 22 July attack.

Note that this excursion is not covered by the conference fee, and an additional cost will be added for those who chose this option.
